2-0 PRESEASON; 6-1 OVERALL

The CJHS team has really given us all reason to be super-excited about being able to watch these guys for the next four years. This could very well be the BEST team that Clinton has ever produced; considering how much they have to learn, how much they have to grow, and how much talent is still untapped.

Parents, please commit to supporting these guys (and the cheerleaders) for the next 4 years. Be a part of the booster club. Be a part of t-shirt sales. Help with Gatorade and replenishing foods. Be a part of the athletic banquet. Or, offer up your services to make this something that nobody else can match.

Aside from the players, coaches and cheerleaders, we offer special thanks to Benjie Barham for leading the parents' side of the booster club, to Ike Tyre and Michael Brown for working the sideline chains and down-markers at home games, Edwin Campbell for ArrowVision work, all parents who came to the booster meetings, and to all parents who came to the games (home AND away) and yelled for these guys. If we left you out, our most sincere apologies. It truly takes a village.... as they say.

And TWO MORE THINGS:

1. We have a number of guys who not only played football this year, but will also be playing CJHS basketball and CJHS baseball. If you will come and support those teams, then you will get to know these guys so well that they will almost be like your own sons!

2. Remember that you can watch game recaps on www.youtube.com. The links are found on this site. Just scroll down.

Thanks again. See you at the Arrow Banquet closer to the end of school!

CJHS v PEARL RECAP

This Tuesday saw the Arrows get back on the winning track when Clinton played host to Pearl in a rematch of the NWR Jamboree game. They wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard. In the first quarter, Rachad Taylor put up his first TD with a 58 yard run. After the 2 point conversion to Jacobi Hearn, the score was 8-0. Immediately afterwards, Michael Brown picked off a Pearl pass and then Taylor exposed the Pirate defense with a 42 yard run to the 4. Darius Mayberry took it in for a 12 yard TD, and the extra point made it a 15-0 game.

The second quarter started off with a Pearl fumble deep in their territory that was recovered by Brown but wasn’t awarded, later resulting in a Pirate TD. Their extra point was stuffed at the goal line by Brown, Jaryne McNeil and Ty Irwin. But the Arrows kept up the momentum immediately afterwards with a 51-yard TD run by Deion Lacey and a 47-yard TD run by Taylor. With 8.7 seconds in the half, Pearl put up another TD to make it 27-12.

The second half started with another Pearl TD, but then the Arrows stepped up already great defense with a fumble recovery by Gideon Pierce. A Michael Brown kick return of 66 yards set up a 4-yard Taylor TD and the Arrows sealed a 35-18 victory. The CJHS team is now 3-1 and has only three games left in the 2011 season.

CJHS v MADISON CENTRAL RECAP

The CJHS Arrows suffered their first defeat of the season on Tuesday, narrowly losing to rival host Madison Central 21-18. For the Arrows, it was their first loss of the year, including pre-season scrimmages.

After a turnover on the first Arrow possession, MC found the end zone on a 6-yard run. The extra point made the score 7-0. CJHS answered right away when Rachad Taylor set the Arrows up with a 61 yard run. On the ensuing play, Darius Mayberry took it untouched into the end zone. The extra point was wide right and the score was MC 7-6.

The Arrow defense held the Jaguars on their next possession, stopping them inside our 15 yard line. After a penalty on CJHS, Taylor made runs of 38 and 44 yards, the later scoring to take the lead. The two point conversion failed and the Arrows took a halftime lead of 12-7.

The third quarter saw MC score on a 33 yard TD run. Later, with the score still 14-12, the Arrows committed their second turnover at their own 25, resulting plays later in a Jag 16 yard TD run. The extra point was good and the score was 21-12.

On the ensuing kickoff, Madison Central tried an onside kick which was recovered by CJHS Arrow Ronnie Brown. After two hard runs by Mayberry, the Arrows moved to the fourth quarter. Taylor then found Armani Lewis on a slant pass to the right that gained 35 yards down to the 3. A few plays later, Taylor found Mayberry on a swing pass to the left to make the score 21-18. The two-point conversion was no good and the game ended on the next Madison Central possession.

The Arrows now get to play their next three of four games at Clinton High School. The next game is against Pearl at CHS and kickoff is set for 5:00.

CJHS MOVES TO 2-0

This afternoon in Terry, the Arrows got their second regular season win 22-7. They were supported by their largest crowd of the year, the majority of whom were decked in RED.

The Arrows scored on their first possession when Darius Mayberry found the endzone from the 2 after two long carries (including a nice kickoff return). The two-point conversion was no good.

Soon after, they found themselves down 7-6 until a breakout 4th quarter, all set up by incredible defensive effort from Austin Beasley. In the fourth quarter alone, Beasley has two fumble recoveries and a sack. Another sack was recorded by Curtis Kelly.

Rachad Taylor scored two TDs, both within the 5 yard line and converted one of the 2-point conversions. Cameron Akers went over on the second 2-point conversion.

The CJHS team will have a recap in the next issue of THE CLINTON NEWS, so be sure to look for it where the paper is distributed. And, be sure to circle next Tuesday for our away game at Madison Central. Everyone knows what kind of rivalry our two schools have long-held. Plan to be there in red for that one, too!

CHANGES!

There have been a few changes in jersey numbers this week. Attached is the REVISED program for the Terry game this afternoon and features the corrected version of the roster.

Wear RED, come to Terry and support the boys!

ARROWS UNDEFEATED. DEFENSE HOLDS BRANDON TO 0 POINTS

The CJHS 8th Grade Arrows held off a tough Brandon Bulldog squad on a cool Clinton evening, beating their cross-town rivals 6-0. Despite two dropped long passes on offense, the game was primarily a defensive struggle on both sides. The biggest defensive play for the Arrows came in the 3rd quarter, when they held the Bulldogs on a 4th down play from the 7 yard line.

With roughly 3:30 to go in the game, Clinton's Michael Brown (#26) intercepted a Brandon pass to set up the Arrow offense. They then mastered a long drive to pull out the win that started with a 4th down pass interference call against a Brandon cornerback covering Barrett Barham (#83). It was followed up by a first down run by Rachad Taylor (#3). Then, after three unsuccessful plays, the Arrows converted their 4th down with a 19 yard TD run by Taylor. The extra point was no good and 2:44 remained.

Brandon had their chances with a couple of long passes that were just out of reach or dropped. The Arrows stuffed their 4th down attempt and chalked it up for their first win of the season.

Afterwards, the 5th quarter was short in action. Despite some great passes by QB Kyle Singleton (#8) and tough runs by Matthew Landfair (#33) and Rico McDonald (#43), the game was called 0-0.

Be sure to follow the Arrows to our next game (at Terry) with kickoff set for 5pm. Check this website to get the times to follow the bus OR directions.

ARROWS BRING HOME TWO VICTORIES

The CJHS 8th Grade Arrow Football Team gave everybody reason to be excited about the 2011 season tonight. The Jamboree at NWR featured two games for the Arrows. Each game consisted of 10 plays from the 40 yard line. Coaches were allowed on the field for the exhibition in an attempt to "fine-tune" the respective offensive and defensive teams.

In the first game, the Arrows defeated Pearl, scoring two touchdowns to Pearl's one. In perhaps the most telling part of the victory, the first string defense held Pearl's first string offense to roughly 20 yards after the first 10 plays. And of the two TDs afterwards by the Arrows, one was a deep pass from Rachad "Rock" Taylor to a wide open Ezekiel Thurman.

In the second game versus a very big Madison Central Jaguar team, it was the running game that put the Arrows in the endzone. And, it was the last play of the entire game that featured the TD to beat the Jags.

The ride home on the CHS bus was probably made a lot better not only by the fact that we came away with two victories, but also because EVERY ARROW played in the games. Some, in fact, played both offense and defense.

The 8th grade Arrows resume practice tomorrow in pads to work harder on improving their game. This is going to be a special season, and you can help in two ways:

1. Join the Arrow Booster Club. It's $20 and the money goes to drinks and such for the team. You can join at the Ice Cream Social hosted by the CJHS Cheerleaders on Thursday at 5:30pm.

2. Follow this blog and COME TO THE GAMES! We will ask the parents to wear a particular color for each game to make our presence easily seen to the guys. Be a part of this family and you will remember it forever!

GAME INJURY

During the 2nd game versus Madison Central, Julian Woodson sustained a lower leg injury. No update is available as of 8pm, but we will post the status just as soon as we hear. Keep him in your prayers that he will be OK !
